A Course in Miracles
Text
INTRODUCTION
1 This is a course in miracles. It is a required course. Only the time you take it is voluntary. Free will does not mean that you can establish the curriculum. It means only that you can elect what you want to take at a given time. The course does not aim at teaching the meaning of love, for that is beyond what can be taught. It does aim, however, at removing the blocks to the awareness of love’s presence, which is your natural inheritance. The opposite of love is fear, but what is all-encompassing can have no opposite.
2 This course can therefore be summed up very simply in this way:
Herein lies the peace of God.
Commentary
Here we are told that A Course in Miracles is a required course. What does that mean? After reading other teachers’ thoughts on this idea, and meditating upon it, I believe what Jeshua (Jesus) is saying, is that the practice of giving and receiving miracles, or expressions of Love/extensions of Love with the intent to bless others is our calling and our duty or dharma in life. Miracles are the means to heal and bring about the “Atonement” or the correction for errors in our thinking, for correction of the primal guilt we feel is our burden, due to having collectively chosen to dream a special existence separate and alone from God and the Sonship of Christ Mindedness. We are all called to be miracle workers, to help create a new world, to bring Heaven to earth and the manifest universe. Knowing what the Course calls our ‘special function’ is required of us, if we are to bring liberation to the dream world.
A Course in Miracles is by no means the only path and the only curriculum. It is part of a universal curriculum. Revelation from Divinity has been ongoing since the inception of time and space and the manifestation of materiality that occurred as a result of that ‘tiny tick of time’, that micro-second, where we dreamed there was something more than God, a power greater than God which we thought we were especially entitled to. Allen Watson from The Circle of Atonement wrote a booklet called “Seeing the Bible Differently: How A Course in Miracles Views the Bible.” In it he talks about a concept that I first was introduced to by Sophian Gnostic Lineage holder Tau Malachi – that of progressive revelation. What both men speak of is an ongoing process of Divinity speaking to mankind through inspiration and direct experience. What has happened, is that people through the progression of time have taken the Divine’s words and distorted them to fit their interpretations of what was being directly revealed. The aspect of revelation being ongoing, is a notion supported by the different covenants and the ‘canceling’ out of old agreements and notions of Atonement (for perceived sins against God – something that A Course in Miracles says is impossible). Jeshua Jesus came to reveal a new understanding of God as Father, an unconditional loving, compassionate presence that does not condemn. Old notions of condemnation, vengeance, and retribution were meant to be dissolved in the life and teachings of Jeshua, but his followers who interpreted his teachings did what people from Old Testament times did as well – projected their guilt and fear onto God, thus justifying that we still had to appease an angry God, be forgiven for our wrongdoings in order to escape everlasting punishment. The old punishment and reward system has been overthrown by teachings of A Course in Miracles. Jeshua says that the Father cannot be both Loving and one who seeks to punish through vengeance.
So, as Allen Watson argues, the New Testament thus came as a succession to the Old Testament, and works such as A Course In Miracles, came as a succession and new understanding of earlier perceived understanding on the part of mankind, a kind of correction and clarification of teachings that didn’t totally discard previously held beliefs, but rather built upon them. Tau Malachi talks about different ‘gradations’ of consciousness, of what he calls “the light transmission” down through the history and succession of prophets and prophecy. Enlightened beings inspired by God, came to hear His/Her Voice more clearly as consciousness has evolved.
So, for those who have studied A Course in Miracles, many know that there are many references to the Bible made by the author of it, Jeshua Jesus himself (if you believe that). Many corrections to earlier teachings are made and clarification is brought to other obscure teachings that he argues were misinterpreted. A Course in Miracles is only one form of the universal curriculum. There are many spiritual paths that can lead us to the awareness of the Home we never in truth left at all. The “Course” is not meant to be another source of inspiration to become fundamentalist about. It teaches however, that by studying it, it will speed up the process of awakening or enlightenment. But it may not be for everyone. But it is a valid path that works, though it may take time to break down old thinking distortions and to heal perceptions in order to become a miracle worker and help build the “New Humanity”.
In the introduction Love is spoken of as being the only real thing there is. The Course emphatically teaches that there are only two emotions one can feel, Love or fear (fear being an absence of Love). Fear is not real, but Love is. Nothing real can be threatened so there is nothing to fear in truth. We cannot be harmed. Since the Divine is perfect Love, we have no reason to fear wrath or vengeance or final damnation of any kind for wrong actions or consciously chosen errors. We can atone and must learn to forgive, extending Love to all. Be at peace in knowing that nothing real can be threatened. You are Love and only Love. Mastery is fearlessness. Love is real. Everything else that stems from fear are just illusions. Since only Love is real, peace is a guarantee. Though we may not seem to feel peace, know that you may be in fear and we can experience a shift into “True Perception” and “Knowing” that peace is our birth right. We were created from Love and therefore since that is what our Source is, so must we be as well.
